Hair Loss

Hair Loss and Propecia

Propecia is a drug that treats mild to moderate male pattern hair loss (MPHL), the primary cause of close to 95 percent of baldness in men. MPHL is caused due to hereditary factors traced back to either side of your family, and has a lot to do with dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

DHT is a substance, that when present on the scalp can shrink the hair's natural follicle, causing it to become shorter. As the hair follicles shrink, the hairs on the top of the head become shorter. Propecia works to halt baldness by reducing the production of DHT on your scalp. When the effect of DHT is inhibited, hair follicles can grow to their normal length.

Male pattern baldness typically follows a set pattern - a receding hairline followed by or accompanied with a balding at the crown. This is how most men bald.

If you've begun to find your hairline receding, you will probably want to consider propecia as a possible remedy for baldness. It's simple to use- just one pill a day - and has the potential not only to halt expanding baldness, but also to regrow a few hairs on your scalp. Be warned, however you will not grow back all the hairs you have lost.

For best results, propecia has to be taken every day for a period of 12 months. If you stop halfway through, you will likely see no benefits of the medication. You will only begin to see effects of the drug after the third month of taking propecia. If, however, after 12 months you have noticed absolutely no improvements, then propecia might not be the right medication for you.

Further, if you begin to see benefits of the medication, and then stop using it, the new hair that you have begun to grow will fall out within 12 months of stopping the medication.

Propecia is only meant for male sufferers of baldness, and is absolutely not recommended for use in women and children. Pregnant women in particular, are strongly advised against having any kind of contact with the pills. Although the pills have a protective coating that enables them to be handled easily, a pregnant woman must not handle crushed pills that expose her and the unborn fetus to the active ingredients in propecia. A male fetus's sex organs may be damaged by exposure to propecia's active ingredients.

If you're considering using propecia for your hair loss, make sure you're committed to the decision, in order to see the full effects of the treatment.
